Brief History

• 07 May 1960 depicts the raising of the Organisation, as inception of this project gave birth to the mighty Border Roads Organisation. The first project of Border Roads Organisation under Brig OM Mani was conceptualized in the year 1960 and the first simultaneous tasks assigned to the Project NEFA and later on Project Tusker and now Project Vartak for construction of Bhalukpong-Tenga axis and maintenance of Missamari-Foothills-Chaku-Tenga road. By the time the Chinese invasion happened in Oct 1962, a Jeepable road in its initial form was by and large ready upto Tawang. Project Vartak has not only created the road networks but have also laid the telephone lines in the AoR of 4 Corps in 1963. We have also proved to be the best in the East in establishing ourselves in every sphere of communication since its inception thereby making the life of this generation very comfortable and simple in terms of communication.


• In subsequent years due to increasing workload three projects were carved out of this Project namely Project Udayak, Project Arunank and Project Brahmank and all were raised in the state of Arunachal Pradesh Project Vartak has the distinction of being responsible for 2100 Km of General Services roads contributing towards operational preparedness of the Army in Tawang sector and has provided the best connectivity in the far flung and remotest areas under 4 Corps zone and last year Project Vartak's contribution towards expenditure in the entire Border Roads Organisation was approx. Rs. 900 Crores which has created a history as no other projects have ever touched the figure since inception of this organisation.
