About Us

Welcome to Border Roads Organisation

To strengthen connectivity and bolster strategic infrastructure in border regions, the Government of India established the Border Roads Organisation in 1960. Starting with two projects-Tusker (now Project Vartak) and Beacon, BRO has now expanded to 18 projects across 11 states, three Union Territories and has footprints in Bhutan.

BRO has the inherent capability to undertake road infrastructure development projects through departmental execution, giving it a unique advantage over other construction agencies. The organisation is a unique amalgamation of civilian and military personnel, combining technical expertise with military resolve. BRO is a self-reliant, highly adaptable organisation, capable of being deployed in any Theatre or Country to further national interests.

BRO is led by the Director General of Border Roads (DGBR) and supported by three Additional Directors General (ADGBRs), one based at the HQ DGBR and two overseeing projects in the North Western and Eastern sectors. BRO operates with unmatched efficiency and dedication, establishing itself as the Agency of Choice for executing critical infrastructure projects in the Nation’s most challenging terrains.

BRO undertakes infrastructure development for several key Ministries and Agencies, including the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and many other agencies. Through these efforts, BRO supports the Nation’s security forces with essential connectivity and ensuring uninterrupted logistics support.

BRO specialises in constructing and maintaining Roads, Bridges, Tunnels, Airfields and Marine Works across some of the world’s most challenging terrains. From the High-Altitude Himalayas, dense forests of the Northeast to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, BRO has become the Go-to Agency for executing critical strategic infrastructure projects to enhance Operational Preparedness of our Security Forces and Socio-Economic development of Nation. With an impressive legacy of achievements, BRO has built over 62,906 km of roads, 1,056 bridges, 6 tunnels and 21 airfields.

The success of BRO is built on the dedication and resilience of its personnel who endure extreme working conditions to accomplish challenging tasks. BRO’s resilience is evident in its critical role in rescue operations, such as the Silkyara Tunnel incident and the cloudburst in Sikkim, where the organisation swiftly responded to save lives and restore vital infrastructure. This exemplary performance in challenging conditions has led to BRO being entrusted with road construction in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas of Chhattisgarh as well as the strategically important Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing project in Manipur & Arunachal Pradesh.

As India moves towards its vision of becoming a developed Nation by 2047, BRO continues to play a key role in this transformation by constructing strategic infrastructure projects, such as the Shinkhun La Tunnel, Arunachal Frontier Highway and Mudh Nyoma Airfield. BRO is shaping the infrastructure of the future using advanced technology and sustainable construction practices.
