Project Swastik

Project Chetak

Brief History

• Project Swastik is located at Bartuk near Gangtok in the state of Sikkim. The mountains of Sikkim are prone to frequent landslides and sinking as the rocks mostly comprise of foliated Phyllites and Schists. It is believed that the state is guarded by the Presiding Deity of Sikkim "Mount Kanchenjunga" (28,208 fts) which is the third highest peak in the World. The area of responsibility of the Project extends from high, snow-clad peaks of Himalayan ranges in North and East Sikkim to the regions of North Bengal.

• The Project was raised on 25 Aug 1960 as Project DRAGON with two Task Forces namely 2 and 8 BRTF to face the challenges offered by the mountainous terrain of Sikkim towards varied and numerous road construction works. The Project was renamed PROJECT SWASTIK on 01 Oct 1963. The Project was disbanded on 31 Dec 1966 on completion of the work in North Sikkim and the two BRTFs were placed under Project Dantak. The Project was re-raised on 01 Nov 1968 to meet the restoration works due to heavy rains and floods experienced by Sikkim during Oct 1968. The Project was moved to Afghanistan in 2004. Due to change in operational plans, North-Sikkim acquired a very high priority. Considering the increased work load in West Bengal and Sikkim and restructuring of organisation, Project Swastik was re- raised at its old location Burtuk (Km 3.00) on road Gangtok-Chungthang on 03 Mar 2008. 758 BRTF which was located at Burtuk was moved to MS-2 location on Gangtok-Nathula Road. The second Task Force, 764 BRTF was raised at Kalimpong. Two new RCCs, 129 and 130 were raised at Phenangla and Rongli respectively. 755 BRTF was inducted at Bagdogra for resurfacing of Runways at Barrackpore and Bagdogra in 2018. The TF has two RCCs, 98 RCC located at Bagdogra and 80 RCC at Barrackpore.
