Brief History
• Project Sampark is located in the State of Jammu and Kashmir and operationally looks after most of the Jammu division. Out of the 10 Districts of the division, Project Sampark has its footfall in the district of Jammu, Reasi, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, Ramban & Samba and in Distt Pathankot of Punjab. Most of the area in the AoR is hilly or mountainous, including Pir Panjal Ranges which separates it from the Kashmir valley. Project Sampark was carved out of Project Beacon on 01 Jan 1975 as a need was felt in early 70's to raise a new Project for all road development projects South of Pir Panjal ranges in the Northern Command. The project was given the name Sampark, which signifies its commitment to reach out and maintain harmonious relationship with all the stakeholders and those associated with road development work in its area of responsibility. Project Sampark has been constructing, improving and maintaining the strategic road network in the border Districts of Jammu, Reasi, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda, Udhampur, Ramban & Samba and in Distt Pathankot of Punjab for the last 46 years and has been a major contributor in ensuring the op preparedness of our Armed Forces and development of this remote region.
• The Project started with 500 Km of existing road network in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir in 1975 with a meagre financial outlay of only Rs 3.40 Crores. At present, the road network under construction and maintenance has grown to approximately 2963 Km, with a yearly budget of almost Rs. 1000 Cr. In addition to the roads, the Project is also responsible for maintaining 140 Km of DCB spread into three Army divisions viz 10, 26 and 29 Infantry Divisions of Northern and Western Command.
• Besides developing infrastructure for our Armed Forces, the Project has been instrumental in the socio-economic development of the region by opening new trade routes and joining the remote and inhospitable areas with rest of the country. Provisioning of support is affected by difficult terrain and harsh climatic conditions and hence task becomes more challenging. Project Sampark has therefore, always been innovative, resourceful and meticulous in their planning and organizing skills in order to stand up to the challenges being faced to provide meaningful support to the fighting troops and succour to the local population stretched across LC. Personnel of this Project are working relentlessly under extreme and hostile climatic conditions with utmost zeal, enthusiasm, courage and dedication. Project Sampark provides employment to more than 8500 Skilled & unskilled personnel of the state, thereby helping them to join the mainstream. The credo of the Project is "Sadaiv Agrasar".
