Brief History
• Republic of India and Kingdom of Bhutan signed a historic treaty of friendship for peace and co-operation on 08 August 1949. As a result, a decision was taken in 1958 to assist Bhutan in its socio-economic development. BRO was tasked to construct roads in Bhutan and Project Dantak was thus raised.
• Project Dantak is one of the oldest projects of BRO. It was raised in April 1961 with its headquarters at Deothang, for road and other infrastructure works in order to assist in socio-economic and strategic development in Bhutan. Project Dantak has completed construction of 1650 kilometers of black topped roads and 115 kilometers of tracks in Bhutan with 5150 meters of bridges. More than 1200 personnel have laid down their lives in pursuit of construction activities.
• Dantak has been associated with the aviation sector of the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan since its inception. The only international airport in Bhutan including the Terminal and Air Traffic Control (ATC) buildings was constructed at Paro, by the Project. The runway length is 2265 metres. The telecommunication of Bhutan was established by Project Dantak with the construction of a 524 km trunk route, the establishment of 14 telephone exchanges and an Indo-Bhutan microwave link. The India House Estate, housing the Indian Embassy including the office building and residential complex, was constructed by Project Dantak. It is spread over 67 acres and this sprawling and beautiful estate is one of the largest diplomatic complexes in the world. Important buildings such as Sherubtse College at Kanglung, Bank of Bhutan at Samdrup Jongkhar, Residential Colony of Chukha Hydel Project, Bhutan Broadcasting Station at Thimphu and the Bulk Petroleum Storage Installation at Samdrup Jongkhar have been constructed by Project Dantak. Besides the construction of roads and prestigious buildings, modern medical facilities were introduced in Bhutan by Project Dantak with the construction of a 50-bed hospital at Deothang, which brought cheer to many Bhutanese through the services of the doctors and medical staff. The credo of the Project is "Connecting People, Connecting Countries".
• Today Dantak is a household name in Bhutan. It has carved a niche for itself in this beautiful Kingdom with the goodwill of citizens of Bhutan, Royal patronage and the support of all concerned. The contribution of Dantak can be best summed up by the following quotes: -
"Dantak can very well be proud of their achievements, they have a major share in the development of Bhutan. During my recent visit to New Delhi, I told the PM that Dantak was your best Ambassador"
"What Dantak has built most is friendship and goodwill”
